Why I Won't Work At FAANG (Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google) :Kinds Of Videos..

We look at google only 3.2 year average employee tenure you know for the average company I guess that's pretty good but we're talking about Google like you got the google plex the owners of you tube the company that knows your entire browser history yeah even when you're in incognito mode  these kinds of videos are always a little difficult to make whenever you're going against the grain you don't really know what the reaction is going to be you know the company's fang face book apple amazon Net Flix and google these are considered the premier companies to work for as a developer and I always felt in order to validate myself as a software engineer I would have to at some point work at one of these companies or me especially someone who makes videos that get watched by a lot of other developers I felt like in order to be legitimate I would have to have that experience under my belt the truth is most people watching this video will never get the opportunity to work for one of these companies just simply based on the percentages of the amount of people that apply versus the amount of people that actually get Offers now full disclaimer here um you know I'm not trying to burst anyone's bubble I'm not saying they're not good companies these are like the most impactful companies of all time and I'm not saying you the viewers who are watching this shouldn't work there and I'm also not saying down the line maybe I would but just right now for me it's just not something that's one of my goals so let's talk about why uh people would want to work at one of these companies obviously you have the fat salary you have the stocks that you get you  get to work with really cool facilities like the Googleplex Face book's campus which I believe was designed by the same person who designed Disneyland the full benefits uh cutting edge Technology and the opportunity to work with some of  the brightest engineers out there you get to work on projects that are so secretive you can't even tell anyone about them and you would think that if you get an offer at one of these companies you take it that's kind of like the end-all for an engineer like you can't get anything better than that and that's kind of what I thought too I was very close to getting offers a  these top tech companies and you look at somewhere like face book it's only 2.5 years we look at google only 3.2 year average employee tenure Which you know for the average company I guess that's pretty good but we're talking about google like you got the Googleplex the owners of You Tube the company that knows your entire browser history yeah even when you're in incognito mode then you look at another company like adobe 5.3 years almost double obviously adobe is no joke it's a big company but it doesn't get the same recognition as some of the other top companies so let me talk about why I think the average tenure time for these companies is pretty low at the end of the day I mean it's still a job every job has the honeymoon phase right where everything seems perfect but that fades away for me it's usually around like the six month mark but at the end of the day every job you know drama comes up politics get involved maybe there's a co-worker that annoys you  may not agree with the direction that management is going and at the same Time now that you are working at one of these companies you have that on your resume you're going to be sought out by a lot more recruiters and knowing that you could go anywhere else a lot of times it seems like the grass is greener on the other side so you know knowing that you're more likely to leave free lunch and dinner and all that doesn't after a while you kind of get used to those privileges and they don't really seem like privileges they just seem like things that you should be getting but a lot after a while that stuff doesn't outweigh the stress of work and Yeah I mean like I said the compensation is great like you know don't get me wrong there but most software companies do pay very well and if you're someone that can get an offer for 200 000 at a company like face book you're probably capable of getting like a pretty good offer maybe like a 160 or 170 elsewhere and you got to ask yourself is there really that much you can do with 200 000 a year that you can't do with like 170 000 not really maybe you have like a little bit bigger place but I think it's more important to work somewhere where you have a better culture fit because you know at the end of the day like would you rather be miserable in a two-bedroom apartment or be happy in a one-bedroom apartment I'd rather be happy and don't even get me started with amazon I mean the burn and churn culture that they have there you're constantly competing against your Peers they really just try to like squeeze every drop out of their engineers and a lot of people don't last there long you know they usually just work there for a couple years until some of their shares vest they get that experience on their resume and then they bounce and now you might be saying SAM you've never worked at fang like who are you to tell us where to work and first of all  did do an internship at amazon so I do have that and second of all like I was saying this is my own personal decision and I really feel like at the big tech companies you're really just like an ant in an ant farm your work isn't really doesn't make that big of an impact you're really just like one little tiny Cog in a large machine so they do pay well but at the end of the day like you're  earning it you're working for it they're not just giving away the money for free like there's several other youtubers that I know they got jobs at a fan Company and then they stopped uploading videos because they didn't have time anymore and there was one youtuber specifically I won't say his name but he ended up getting a job at face book and I asked him I was like you know how's the work life bounce and he was like I'm not really I don't know if I'm allowed to say but I work probably like 60 hours a week and then like after that we go out for co-workers and then so basically your whole day is consumed and even when I interviewed at google I was asking them how what it was like to work there and he was like yeah we're going in the morning and then we usually stay there till night because that's when they start serving dinner then we grab a dinner we'd go home bring our laptops and then start working so when you work at these companies they really consume your life so you know it's all about perspective I'm in my 30s now maybe 10 years ago if you ask me I'd be like you know what I'm okay I'm still young I Have a lot more energy I'm willing to work you know x amount of hours but as you get older you kind of realize that little things like your status where you work you know it's not as important and you know a lot of other companies you know like I said they might not have the name but you still do get to work with smart engineers everywhere anywhere I've worked at there's been very brilliant developers I've never considered myself like the smartest uh best developer anywhere I've been and like I was saying the interview process for these companies is very low and the preparation that it takes to really be qualified to Interview is pretty rigorous like right now with work and everything else I have going on I would probably need to study for at least three months until I felt like I could really prep like go through an entire fang interview and then if you end up doing that and you don't get the job it's kind of like you did all that prep for nothing so you know I get emails from amazon recruiters like pretty much monthly but I'm like it's not worth it to go through all that just for one interview like maybe you've had several lined up it might be worth it but yeah not just for one so like I was saying if that's still something you want to do don't let me stop you if you do decide to pursue one of these companies I wish you luck I hope you get the job I hope you get a big offer um but for me it's just not what I'm looking for right now I'm trying to just have a little bit more balance in my life uh I don't know if you ever watch interviews with like old people and they're like you know what is like Something you would change differently in your life a lot of them are like you know what I wish I didn't work as long I wish I just spent more time on other things like traveling family doing things that I wanted to do and when you're younger you don't really think about that stuff you feel like uh you have all the time in the world so yeah you know do whatever you want to do this was just my rant my personal Opinion I hope I didn't get blacklisted by all these companies in case I want to apply in the future but you know I always try to keep it real with you guys I just you know say what's on my mind you know just do my thing and um yeah thank you guys so much   and uh keep on coding lost my train of thought There Do you
