I have a thumb drive right here it's a very standard typical USB thumb drive 16 gigabytes you can buy these anywhere and what's happened is the file system on this Drive has corrupted so if I go ahead and I plug it into my PC you'll notice that what happens is I get a message that pops up saying that I need to format the drive in order for it to be usable on the computer now this obviously poses a big problem because this doesn't just happen to USB sticks it happens to SD cards see fast cards all kinds of things right and in order to get the drive back you're gonna need to format the card which poses an obvious problem because you're going to lose all of the data if you format the card but with this fill 4 we can go in and extract the data meaning that will not only get our USB stick back but we're also going to get all the data off the stick so we get the best of both worlds and that sounds pretty good to me so let's jump into it alright so the first thing of course is going to be to open up disk drill it's gonna do that and once it opens you're going to want to be on the data recovery panel right here now I'm just going to give you a quick overview of the UI just in case you're not from there so in the middle here we have all the disks that are connected to the computer so you have hardware disks and logical volumes we call this disc list then to the left here we have our data recovery panel as well as our extras which aren't data protection and Drive backup and then under recent sessions I have all of my recent sessions but if this is your first time using this drill this will be empty so you don't have to worry about that and then if you go ahead and actually select a drive to the right it'll give you all of the info and different metadata about the drive as well as the ability to choose your recovery method and start the scan so that's the overview of the data recovery tab built into disco for now it's time to actually scan the drive so that we can start recovering our data so once you have the drive plugged into your computer go ahead and select it from the disk list underneath hardware disks and I should mention here that you'll have better luck scanning the entire hardware disk versus a logical volume so just keep that in mind but select the hardware disk from the disk list and then under recovery methods just choose all recovery methods this will just be better for ease and redundancy and finally click search for lost data so during the scan you're gonna see a progress bar along with some icon indicators to let you know how the scan is doing and of course the amount of time that this will take depends on the size of the drive so you may need to exercise some patience here and after each scanning method is complete a report of what has already been found will show up here by these colored icons and the numbers that show up in the top right corner of each one which will indicate how many of each kind of file have been found on the drive thus far and you can even go in and review the items mid scan by clicking the button in the top right we're just gonna wait for this whole scan to finish so I'll catch you that alright so upon full completion the total number of files and the size of all those files will be displayed and at this point you can either view or recover the items using the two buttons on the top right but I'm going to just click review items so we can actually see what we're working with here so go ahead and click review items now one thing that's important to note if a file can be recovered or not it must be viewable in the preview window so a quick way to do this is just to click the little eye icon next to a file name on the far right side here which will open up the preview icon of that specific file which will let you know if that file is guaranteed to be recoverable or not so that's another thing to keep in mind it must be viewable in the preview window if it has any chance of being recovered so how do we navigate the file structure well there are two ways to do it number one is the Windows Explorer like structure in the middle here we have all the different folders that you can expand and see which files are within and there are also a series of categories on the left side here pictures video audio documents archives and other so let's say you lost a few photos that you wanted to recover well instead of filtering through lots of audio documents videos you could just skip right to pictures and you could look through all of the picture files that were discovered this includes JPEGs PNG s camera RAW files etc any kind of picture file will be in this category same goes for video audio documents etc now additionally if you know the name of the item you can search for it in the search bar in the top right here as well as using the filters by clicking them in filtering files by file size all the way up to 2 gigabytes and deleted within the last 1 day to 2 years now keep in mind that these filters while they are helpful they aren't the be-all end-all for this whole situation because sometimes metadata for certain files can be lost in the event of a mass corruption or mass deletion or whatever so just keep that in mind when you're looking through these files is that if they don't show up in the filters that doesn't mean they're gone just means that the metadata may not be there so keep that in mind as well okay so now to recover you have two options you can recover all the files or you can recover some specific files recovering all is pretty simple just leave everything unchecked and go down to the bottom click the recover all button it's pretty simple and straightforward but if you want to recover some specific files you're gonna want to go and find the files that you want and then place a checkmark next to each file that you want recovered and now you'll notice that the recover all button has actually changed to just recover along with the number of files that's there and the total size collectively of all those files so what I'm gonna do is just recover everything just to show you the real power of this drill here so we're just going to leave everything unchecked and go down and click recover all next it will ask you to choose a save location which is you guys know I typically choose my desktop so we're just gonna do that and once it confirms the destination go ahead and click OK now while the recovery is in process you'll just have to wait but you should notice that some folders and files should start to appear in your save location so I'm just gonna wait till this is done and once your files have finish recovering you should get a notification in the bottom right of your screen as well as in distil now at this point you can either return to the disc list using the blue button in the bottom here or press the back button to continue reviewing the files just in case you think you've missed something but now if I go to my desktop here you'll see I have a series of folders and if I open one of them navigate through the folder structure you can see I now have all o my files saved and ready to go alright so now one more thing you should be aware of is that if we go back to the disc list here you'll notice that under recent sessions you now have a new session with the name of your card or your thumb drive or whatever if you click on that and click the continue button you'll be able to pick up right where you left off from that scan which is pretty cool.
